Like many Italian-Americans in the 1920's, Nick's family has strong connections with the mafia. Which is to say, his family is almost entirely in the Mafia. His mother works for a cafe in one of the many side streets of New York City, his father managed it and did business for the mafia on the side and out of the backrooms.
When Nick was just six, his father had been caught cheating with the wife of a fellow member, Joseph. He was shot by Joseph himself, but it wasn't without punishment. Joseph was cast out in the interest of not spilling anymore blood, he hasn't been heard from since. His immediate family remained loyal to the bigger family of the Mafia. Nick and his mother were considered victims in this and his uncles kept an eye on them, doting on Nick and spoiling him out of guilt for how his father betrayed him, his mother and the family as a whole. It was ugly, ugly business.
Though none of his close relations are as high as a Boss or Underboss, one of his three uncles (on his father's side) had the prestigious rank of Caporegime (Captain). Nick had become the favourite nephew of his uncle Paolo and by the time he was ten, he was following him everywhere. Everywhere is questionable when you're a Capo, so Nick had found himself as a regular attendee of many, many card games in seedy bars. It was there that Nick learned a number of things he still uses today. Tricks with cards, how to cheat, what wine to have with what meal and what ladies like. Nick quickly became popular with the female staff and entertainers, given his pretty eyes and his adorable, smug smile. The nights he spent here while his mother worked shaped his childhood. It was undeniable that he'd be a valuable member of the mob, but his uncles saw more of his father in him every day. The older he became, the more he resembled him in looks and his attitude toward women.
Though he'd previously been enrolled in a school for boys (like most schools), his uncle pulled strings to have him placed in Clarion for the remainder of his education. By his logic, the revolution of a co-ed school would be the ideal place to teach him to respect women a little better. Nick was pleased with the idea for all the wrong reasons, though he did fine with his studies in his previous schools, there's something alluring about the idea of being surrounded by ladies for once.
personality | Nick is, without a doubt, a product of his upbringing. Mob connections, a traumatic loss of his father and a spoiled upbringing have made him an entitled, grumpy sleaze. He doesn't put up with anything he absolutely doesn't have to and he has minimal patience for things he needs to tolerate. He pulls faces, talks back and plain stops listening if his interest isn't held.
Despite that, he's smart and mostly a visual learner. If he's watching something, there's a high chance he can copy it himself with a few tries. Of course, this relates more to slight of hand and a good memory than anything else. For the most part, he does well in tests that are based on retaining information than displaying genuine skill. In areas like art, sport or music (though he is an excellent singer), he can be fairly dense or openly disinterested. On top of that, he's very quick witted. He's had to hold his own and keep up with smart talking and joking from his uncles for a long time, so he's merciless when it comes to his peers and even his teachers. He has, as usual, almost no tolerance for people he deems too stupid to play along.
One of his most notable characteristics is the fact that he is a complainer at heart. Nothing is ever good enough enough, everything is too much effort and everyone is weighing him down. If he's talking, he's probably whining.
Though Nick has a smart mouth, he's able to fake or even gain respect for some people over time. If it's beneficial, be it a grade or a date, Nick can pack away the snark for a while. For the most part, he prefers to treat 'em mean and keep 'em keen when it comes to ladies. He's noticed they don't do much more than get you in trouble, his father is proof of that. To this day, he still holds a little bitterness for the fact that his father died but the woman he slept with was left to wallow in the mess she made. This has made Nick quite the misogynist, and he's still a product of his time. He doesn't think women are capable of much more than trouble, even if he jumped at the chance to attend a school where he'd be surrounded by them. His mother, of course, is the exception of all of this. Nick loves and respects his mother so much that she's a pretty big weak point for him.
Above all, Nick respects himself. He's pretty sure he's destined for greatness, and he treats himself like it. He doesn't lie to himself, at least. He's destined for greatness, but not to be great. He accepts that he's a bad person, he embraces it. He maintains himself well all the same, appearances are very important to him. Nick is always well groomed, always stylish and dressed well for first and last impressions.
SAMPLES
sample 1 | There isn't a long gap between classes, so there isn't much time to dawdle through the corridors. Of course, that doesn't stop Nick. Common decency rarely stops Nick. It's a nice day, he doesn't feel like being stuck in a class, he doesn't feel threatened by a talking to for being tardy. So he dawdles, ambling from point A to point B and people watching as he does. People being ladies, of course. There isn't a lot he needs to see in another fella, but the uniforms sure sit well on some of the girls.
"Afternoon, ladies." He'll say cordially as he passes a group, because he's really only polite on greeting. It's all downhill from there, which is why it's probably a good thing they're all on their way to their own classes. He doesn't have anything against mathematics, it just seems less interesting than all the opportunities he's walking past. His shoulders slump and he lets out a groan, the closer he gets to class, the closer he is to sitting there for an hour or more. He needs to find something to do.
It doesn't take him too long to find a reflective surface and that's as good an excuse as any to whip out his comb and start to fix his hair. Barely a hair is out of place, but it's the finer details that matter. He gives himself a wink once he feels he's accomplished his mission and rounds the corner to his class, just slinking in before the door is shut.
"Sorry ma'am, big school." He gives his excuse curtly, sliding into his seat and looking expectantly at the professor.
